question about the article on FP. How was Ballan’s Yugo $1,500? A few years ago I bought a 20+ year old Civic, with nothing wrong but a cracked dash and inaccurate speedometer, for 2k. Are cars that expensive in NY?

Seriously... I’ve bought some $300 beaters that were in better shape than that. Granted, that was many years ago, but even with inflation those were still like $600 cars, not $1500.

They’re collectible, surprisingly. A running GV+ is not a common car. By 1991 buyers had figured out that Yugos weren’t really a great deal, and other companies had brought in competition (VW Fox, Geo Metro, Subaru Justy, etc.) seriously cutting into Yugo’s market. Plus with Yugoslavia about to explode it was the last year for U.S. sales.

That’s crazy something like that would appreciate. At least Beetle’s were well made for their time.

It’s like the Edsel. The infamy brings recognition and thus collectibility.
